Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo

Program description

Aoyama Gakuin University offers one semester or one academic year student exchange program for eligible CSUSB students. Academic offerings include classes in Japanese language, culture, and society, and 50+ courses in areas such as business/economics, communication, literature, politics and law taught in English. The International Exchange Center (IEC) as well as faculty advisors and student tutors provide support for exchange students at Aoyama Gakuin University. The IEC will organize various social and cultural events for international students throughout the academic year, such as monthly coffee meetings, field trips (Tochigi, Yamanashi, etc.), Japanese traditional candy art lesson, watching Kabuki and Sumo, Xmas party, etc.

Aoyama Gakuin University is located in Aoyama, in central Tokyo. Aoyama Gakuin’s history dates from 1874, when missionaries from the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States established three schools that eventually became the present Aoyama Gakuin system. Aoyama Gakuin University currently has about 20,000 students studying in its various divisions. The university maintains a number of active international exchange programs for students and faculty. Due to this, Aoyama Gakuin University is well known for its international ambience: many of the students and faculty have attended universities and research institutes abroad, while numerous scholars and students from around the world have studied at the university. Eligibility requirements

  • Must be a CSUSB student in good academic standing
  • Have a cumulative GPA of  2.5 or above
  • Have the Japanese language ability equivalent to Level 4 Japanese Language Proficiency Test or higher (at CSUSB, JAPN 103 or higher)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in college level Japanese courses

Note: Applicants with Japanese citizenship can also be accepted as exchange students. Those who have both Japanese and foreign citizenship should apply as a Japanese citizen.

Hakuoh University, Tochigi

Program description

Hakuoh University offers one semester or one academic year student exchange program for eligible CSUSB students. Academic offerings include Japanese Language Studies, Japanese Area Studies, Comparative Culture Studies, and International Relations Studies (Business Management). This program is designed for students that seek proficiency in the Japanese language. The program also offers optional programs such as field trips (Nikko, Nasu, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kyoto, etc.), tea ceremony, workshops (textile tie dye, ceramics, etc.), homestay, international exchange events, English teaching assistant training, language exchange program, etc.

Hakuoh University, founded by life-long educator Dr. Kazuyoshi Kamioka in 1986, is a private institution located in the city of Oyama in the Tochigi prefecture, which lies 75 kilometers north of Tokyo and may be considered the entrance to the Tohoku (northeastern) provinces of Japan. Hakuoh University currently has about 4,000 Japanese and international students studying in its various divisions. The name Hakuoh means 'white seagull', and the motto plus ultra, or 'more beyond', are intended to inspire students to soar to their fullest potential. Eligibility requirements

  • Must be a CSUSB student in good academic standing
  • Have completed, at least, the fourth semester (or sixth quarter) of college
  • Have approximately a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have completed, at least, the fourth-semester (or sixth quarter) of Japanese or higher (at CSUSB, JAPN
    203 or higher)
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above in college level Japanese courses

  • State University fee (CSUSB tuition)
  • Exchange program fee/departure processing: $750
  • Dormitory housing fees are waived by the program. Security deposit for the accommodation is 10,000 yen/year (you will pay it after arrival).

Seijo University, Tokyo

Program description

Seijo University offers one semester or one academic year student exchange program for eligible CSUSB students. Academic offerings include intensive Japanese language courses, Japan Studies, Area Studies and Special Topics courses taught in English with tutorial assistance for inbound exchange students. Also, exchange students with adequate Japanese proficiency are allowed to register in most of the regular undergraduate courses taught in Japanese. Credit earned at Seijo can be applied to the student's degree at their home Institution. Seijo Exchange Program includes many fun events like various parties, Seijo Regatta/boat race, International Student Session, visiting the other schools of Seijo Gakuen, etc.

Seijo University is a private university located in Seijo, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Seijo has its origins in 'Seijo Gakuen' Seijo educational Institutes, which was founded in 1917, by Dr. Masataro Sawayanagi. After the period of 'Seijo Higher School', under the pre-World War II education system, the present Seijo University was established in 1950. Since then, Seijo has adhered to the founding philosophy, which respects the individuality and creativity of students, particularly by retaining small-class education. Seijo University has endeavored to provide education of the highest quality by encouraging initiative and independent thought, through close interaction between students and professors. Their free and relaxed learning atmosphere cultivates the intellect, sensitivity and sophistication, enabling them to send a great number of well-prepared graduates into society.   • Housing: Seijo University does not have on-campus dormitories. Seijo University shall secure rooms for exchange   
    students either Seijo International House, Shibata Mansion, or other residences.

Financial assistance by Seijo University

  • Living stipend in the amount of ¥80,000 Japanese yen per month will be offered to CSUSB exchange students per cohort, during their attendance at Seijo University for a maximum of eleven months.
  • Rent assistance to the maximum amount of ¥30,000 Japanese yen per month per student will be offered to CSUSB exchange students. The rent assistance is offered in situations in which an individual exchange student’s housing costs are exceeding ¥30,000 Japanese yen per month.

Two-Week Summer Program in Japan

Hakuoh University in Tochigi, Japan (July 5 - 18, 2016)

This academic program organized by the Department of World Languages and Literatures and the College of Arts and Letters is open to all majors. No former knowledge of Japanese is required and individuals not enrolled at CSUSB may also apply.

The $500 presidential scholarship is available for all CSUSB students who apply for the Japan Summer Program 2016. For more information on this scholarship, please contact Study Abroad Office (CE-348, 909-537-3944/3723, goabroad@csusb.edu).

Program fee includes application fee, insurance, lodging, meals, local transportation, lectures, company visits and excursions. It does not include CSUSB tuition/fees, airfare and personal expenses.
