Summer Arabic Program Application

StarTalk High School Student Strand - Summer Intensive Arabic Program

California State University, San Bernardino: Special Opportunity for Motivated High School Students!

Are you good at learning foreign languages? Or, do you speak Arabic at home with your family? Do you like learning about different world cultures? If so, consider applying to the CSUSB Summer Arabic Program. Through the award of a StarTalk grant, CSUSB will be able to accept 25 high school juniors and seniors* into the Summer 2009 Intensive Arabic program at very reduced rates (only $282 instead of the $2000 price for university students). Needs-based scholarships will also be available to defray the program fees, tuition and textbooks.

You will attend classes from 8:00-6:00 Monday-Friday plus Saturdays from 9-1. Four days a week will be dedicated to direct language study (mornings) plus cultural activities (afternoons) and weekly field trips to Arabic-speaking local community and/or Arabicrelated cultural site. The program focuses on being able to speak Arabic and explore cultures. You will receive individualized instruction through interactions with faculty, classmates and peer tutors (college native speakers). Special activities include a fourday camping trip, cooking & dance lessons, and information about educational opportunities
& scholarships !

Once the summer session is over, you will continue to study Arabic during the 2009-10 academic year with classes every other Saturday as well as a rich online program, a film series and conversational practice with peer tutors-- or, you can sign up for one of the regular college-level Arabic classes (Tues/Thurs at 4 PM). By the end of the 12 month program, you will have earned 20 quarter-term units of college credit. Plus, your knowledge of the Arabic language will give you a competitive edge for many national and institutional college scholarships.

Your $282 fee includes:
• tuition and fees for the summer intensive Arabic program (12-14 college credits) and the academic year courses (8-12 college credits)
• 15 meals a week during the summer program (breakfast, lunch and dinner most days) plus lunch during the academic year Saturday classes
• field trips
• co-curricular activities (dance, calligraphy, crafts, sports, music, cooking)
• Four day camping trip from July 27-July 31

This fee is non-refundable. Also, the fee does not include the cost of your textbooks and school supplies (approximately $250). Scholarships are available, though, to cover the $282 fee and the cost of textbooks.

* If you are currently a sophomore or junior, then you can apply! Graduating high school seniors can still apply to the Arabic Program, as long as space is available, but will not be eligible for the StarTalk Scholarships.
